Tribute planned for officer killed during stand-off

Sheriff's officers in the Detroit area are planning a tribute Friday for a 39-year-old police officer who was fatally shot in a Detroit suburb.

The Wayne County sheriff's department says its deputies and other personnel plan to stop their vehicles at 10:30 a.m. on Friday and simultaneously enable their lights and sirens for 15 seconds in memory of West Bloomfield Township police Officer Pat O'Rourke. His funeral Mass begins at that time in Fenton.

A huge crowd is expected to say their goodbyes at O'Rourke's funeral at St. John the Evangelist Church on Adelaide Street. Fenton Police said they will shut down that road between North and Silver Lake roads.

O'Rourke leaves behind four children and a wife. According to the Detroit Free Press, a fund has been created to help O'Rourke's family – donations can be made at any Bank of America branch and checks should be made out to "Officer Patrick O'Rourke Family Trust."

O'Rourke was shot Sunday night as he and other officers investigated a report of shots fired at a home in the affluent Oakland County community, northwest of Detroit.

The shooting prompted a 20-hour standoff that ended after the suspect fatally shot himself.
