Toddler mauled by dog expected to recover

A toddler is recovering after being nearly mauled to death by a dog in Buena Vista Township on Monday.

Police said the 3-year-old girl suffered massive puncture wounds to the side of her face and even lost a portion of her ear.

The incident happened at a home inside the Saginaw Villa Trailer Park in Buena Vista Township around 4 p.m. on Monday. The home is located on Apollo Drive, just off of Dixie Highway.

Buena Vista Police Sergeant Sean Waterman said that the dog was left behind by a person who once lived at the address.

MLive.com reports that this isn't the first time the dog, which is a female boxer-pit bull mix, bit the same girl. Police said the dog also bit the girl about a month ago, but the family allegedly couldn't afford the $130 to have animal control officials pick up the dog.

The dog is currently being held by animal control. The victim, Breanna, has undergone surgery to fix the damage to her face. Hospital officials tell WNEM.com the girl will make a full recovery.

TV5 further learned that pit bulls or pit bull mixes are banned from the mobile home park.

Late Thursday, Saginaw County Animal Care Center director Kevin Wilken issued the following statement:

"On behalf of the Saginaw County Animal Care Center, we extend our well wishes for a speedy recovery to the child involved in the incident on March 11, 2013, with the dog in Buena Vista Township.  Saginaw County Animal Care Center (SCACC) responded to the call and removed the dog from the property.  The dog is currently under quarantine at SCACC.

The matter is currently being investigated. Until the matter has been thoroughly investigated, SCACC will not be able to comment any further."
