Thief steals idling pickup truck, crashes on golf course

A man warming up his pickup truck Sunday night was surprised to find someone had stolen the vehicle from outside his residence.

The Isabella County Sheriff's office said the theft occurred at a home on E. Ward Street in Union Township around 10 p.m. Authorities said a woman took the 1988 GMC Sierra and was spotted by the truck's owner near a Burger King on E. Pickard Road.

The driver of the stolen pickup then got onto US-127 and headed southbound. The owner contacted 911 Central Dispatch and said the suspect was driving at speeds of over 100 mph.  The suspect ended up losing control just south of Blanchard Road, left the roadway to the west and went airborne. The pickup slid sideways through the fence at Genuine Road, crossed Genuine Road, went into a ditch, hit some small trees and started rolling.

The pickup rolled numerous times, ejecting the driver. The pickup finally came to rest on Maple Creek Golf Course.  Police said she was not wearing a seatbelt.

Deputies said the driver of the pickup was transported to McLaren Mid-Michigan Hospital by MMR and then flown by helicopter to Covenant HealthCare in Saginaw. The extent of her injuries is unknown at this time.

Authorities said criminal charges are pending through the Isabella County Prosecutor's Office.
