Teen charged as adult in Flint's New Years Day homicide
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton has charged a Flint teenager as an adult in the New Years Day shooting that left another Flint teenager dead.
According to police reports, 15-year-old Gianni Herron was shot and killed in the basement of a home on Nprth Chevrolet Avenue in the early morning hours of New Years Day.
On January 3rd, Shukur Terome Brown, 16, was taken into custody by Flint Police after he participated in a news conference at a local church with his attorney, a local pastor and others and made a public statement about his involvement in Herron's death. Brown said he accidentally shot his "best friend" Gianni Herron while playing with a gun they bought on the street for $40.
Leyton then filed a juvenile petition against Brown and he was lodged at the Genesee Valley Regional Detention Center.
Tuesday morning, after further review of the evidence presented by police, Leyton filed charges against Brown, including second-degree murder, possession of a short-barreled shotgun and possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.
"Shukur Brown illegally possessed a short-barreled shotgun and wantonly and willfully disregarded the life and general safety of the victim when the gun was fired," said Leyton.
Brown will be arraigned in 68th District Court Tuesday and a pre-trial and preliminary examination will be scheduled.
