Study: Most teachers effective

Results of a report that says nearly all teachers in 10 of Michigan's largest school districts were effective or highly effective have raised concerns by the group that released them.

The study released Thursday by Education Trust-Midwest asked Michigan's 30 largest districts to rank teachers during the 2011-12 school year, the first year all schools had to rate teachers.

In the only 10 districts that supplied data, 99.4 percent of the teachers were rated in the top two categories.

Sarah Lenhoff, assistant director of policy and research for the Royal Oak-based nonprofit organization, tells the Detroit Free Press those ratings raised concerns that struggling teachers were not being identified or given necessary training and support.

School administrators say conclusions can't be drawn from first year ratings.
