Several Michigan lawmakers are trying to start a group focused on school safety.
Recently introduced legislation would create a statewide School Safety Commission to review current policies.
A TV5 investigation looked at school safety, specifically lockdown drills. K-12 schools are required to run two lockdown or shelter-in-place drills but there's not much state oversight.
"All we can do is talk to our local people and get information from them about how things are working," said Bob Higgins, Michigan Safe Schools consultant.
Gov. Rick Snyder called for a review of school security policies after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT.
According to a spokesperson for the governor, several state agencies are reviewing current practices and plan to issue a report this spring. For more details into this report, click to watch the video above.
