A Gladwin County woman is recovering after she was shot and held captive for several days.
TV5 is told she escaped from a home in a rural area and alerted neighbors.
This is the second recent instance of a young woman who was held against her will in a very scary situation. Last week, a Central Michigan University student was abducted and raped before she managed to escape. Her attacker later died when he was shot by police.
But in this most recent case, the suspect was arrested and taken alive.
Gladwin County Sheriff Mike Shea has been in law enforcement for 25 years and says he's never seen a case like this.
"The elements around this specifically are very unique," said Shea. Shea said that on Saturday his deputies were called to a home on Walter Road in Hay Township. When they arrived, they found a woman with a gunshot wound claiming she had been held captive for five days at nearby home.
Deputies said somehow she got free, ran to a neighbor's house and called the police, giving them a clear description of the perpetrator.
"We knew who we were seeking relatively early in this case," said Shea.
A short time later, deputies arrested the 31-year-old Gladwin County suspect without incident as he drove through the area. He's in jail facing attempted murder charges, and authorities said he has a history of violence. Meanwhile, Shea believes it was the woman's quick thinking that ultimately saved her life. "She's the model of ‘never give up.' Things did not look good for her early on but she didn't give up," Shea said.
Right now Shea is being tight-lipped as to how the woman ended up with the suspect in the first place. She is recovering at Midland's hospital, where she is listed in stable condition.
She sheriff told TV5 he's glad the suspect in this case is sitting behind bars in jail. "To get these kinds of folks off the street, it makes my guys feel good and I know it makes the community feel, well, that we're doing the best job we can do with what we have. And it's great. The swift justice is great," said Shea.
Investigators would not elaborate on the relationship between the victim and the suspect. He could be formally charged as early as Tuesday in Gladwin County.
