The Saginaw Police Union is expected to present a proposal to the city that could lead to the sheriff's department taking over patrols of the city of Saginaw.
The city and police union met Thursday.
Right now, Saginaw city leaders say they will press forward with plans to contract out services to the sheriff's department.
But Sheriff Bill Federspiel says he won't even consider the proposal if the union isn't on board.
Federspiel said, "This was a very positive day for us; we had good dialog and we came out of there with something to work on. We are closer in that we offered them a serious proposal and we had not done that before."
Right now, the city of Saginaw is facing a budget deficit of more than $3 million.
