St. Louis residents are taking to the streets to show their displeasure after an 8-year-old Golden Retriever was shot and killed by a police officer over the weekend.

About 25 supporters marched from the site where the dog named "Scout" was killed. The group then marched through St. Louis to city hall in order to make their message known. 

Some of the dogs wore T-shirts that read "you killed my brother" and "I'm a dog, don't shoot me."

Wednesday's protest was held in several locations across the Mid-Michigan town, including one in front of St. Louis City Hall, and another at Clapp Park.

About 100 people were at the two locations with their pets in tow, mainly dogs. The protesters are holding signs that read, "Justice for Scout," and as cars passed, supporters honked their horns.

Scout's owner, Brian Goetzinger, said they are calling for the police officer to step down or be suspended because that officer can no longer be a respected authority figure in the community.

Goetzinger said that the first step in making the situation better is an in-person apology from the officer or anyone in the police department.

St. Louis Police Chief Patrick Herblet told TV5 that he and the officer that fired the shots are very sorry for the Goetzinger's loss, but he said he cannot take any further action against the officer with the information that is available to him at this time.

A candle light vigil is planned for Wednesday night at the spot where Scout was gunned down.
