Police find child, 2, wandering down street

BAD AXE, MI (WNEM) -- Police in Bad Axe were notified of an unsupervised child walking down a roadway Saturday evening.

The 2-and-a-half-year-old boy was found by a woman walking on Watkins Place, near N. Port Crescent, appropriately dressed and clean. Bad Axe Police Chief David Rothe helped located the boy's parents by speaking with the managers of the Port Crescent Apartments. They were able to identify the boy and gave officers the apartment number of the boy's mother.

When officers arrived, a 28-year-old man answered the door and appeared very sleepy. The man informed officers he had just worked a 12-hour shift and sat down on the couch where he said he must have fallen asleep. The man identified the child and said he was babysitting. Police said the child's mother, and the couple's 6-week-old daughter, had left the apartment to visit with friends. Officers said the apartment was clean and orderly and called the child's mother to ask her to return to the apartment.

Chief Rothe said Child Protective Services is investigating the incident and his report has been turned over to the Huron County Prosecutor's office for possible charges against the 28-year-old.
