Mundy Township won't contract out police services

Mundy Township board members unanimously voted to suspend discussions on contracting out police services to the Genesee County sheriff's office.

More than 100 people attended the township board meeting Monday night to weigh in on the talks.

The board decided to not go forward with contract discussions, but recommend that the police department look deeper into its budget and see what other cost-saving measures could be implemented.

When the decision was announced, the audience in attendance was in an uproar.

Mundy Township Supervisor David Guigear said the board was looking into the idea of consolidation because the Genesee County sheriff's proposals cost about $1.2 million to $1.5 million a year, compared to the township police department's budget of $2.1 million.
