Mich. lawmaker: Ban openly carried guns in schools

A state lawmaker says Michigan should no longer let people openly carry guns into schools.

Under existing law, people with concealed weapons permit may openly carry guns in schools and other gun-free zones in Michigan. But it's illegal to carry concealed weapons in those places.

Democratic state Rep. Andy Schor of Lansing and Michigan's largest teachers' union say the open-carry "loophole" must be closed inside schools after the massacre at a Connecticut school. They held a news conference Thursday calling for passage of legislation.

Gov. Rick Snyder in December vetoed legislation that would have allowed concealed weapons in gun-free zones and prohibited openly carried weapons. He says he wants schools to be able to ban guns completely from their premises if they see fit.
