Mich. lawmaker: Ban openly carried guns in schools

A state lawmaker says Michigan should no longer let people openly carry guns into schools.

Under existing law, people with concealed weapons permit may openly carry guns in schools and other gun-free zones in Michigan. But it's illegal to carry concealed weapons in those places.

Democratic state Rep. Andy Schor of Lansing and Michigan's largest teachers' union say the open-carry "loophole" must be closed inside schools three months after the massacre at a Connecticut school. They plan to announce legislation Thursday.

Gov. Rick Snyder in December vetoed a bill that would have allowed concealed weapons in gun-free zones and prohibited openly carried weapons. He wanted schools, sports stadiums, hospitals and other property owners to be able to ban guns completely from their premises if they saw fit.
