Man accused of murdering 4-year-old boy in court Tuesday

The man accused of murdering a 4-year-old boy is due back in court Tuesday.

Anthony Bennett is expected to be in the Bay City Federal Court for a pre-trial hearing.

It comes a little more than a week after he was indicted on first-degree murder charges in the death of 4-year-old Carnel Chamberlain back in June.

Chamberlain's burned body was found June 28 under the boy's home near Mt. Pleasant. Bennett was living in the home with Carnel and the boy's mother.

In addition to the murder charge, the grand jury also returned indictments for assault against the child and his mother - as well a charge of animal cruelty and two counts of witness tampering.

If convicted of first-degree murder, Bennett faces a mandatory term of life imprisonment.

He's currently at the Bay County jail.
