Leaders in Saginaw vow to take action to stop violence
Community and business leaders fed up with the gun violence in the city of Saginaw met Friday morning to decide what they're going to do to help stop it.
Grady Holmes, of the Ezekiel Project, said it starts with small simple steps.
"We're on this campaign with all 13 school districts in Saginaw County to get the superintendents, principals and administrators to say 'I value you' when students walk in the halls of their buildings," said Holmes.
Zigmond Kozicki works with the Saginaw Rising Project. This spring, 60 troopers will graduate from the Michigan State Police academy. Kozicki asked people to write Gov. Rick Snyder requesting that 25 of those troopers be placed in Saginaw.
"If we put 25 state police troopers in the community and they are only dedicated to violent crime and major crime activities in 18 months we'll see a significant difference," said Kozicki.
Members of the group are looking to get the D.A.R.E. program back in more schools. They also want to draw more attention to the Crime Stoppers program, so people will feel safe reporting crimes. Leaders know change won't happen overnight. But, they say with these and other plans put into action, change will come eventually.
