Improvements coming to I-75 in 2013
Local drivers will soon have more headaches as they hit the road.
That's because more repair work is expected next year on the Zilwaukee Bridge and I-75.
The Michigan Department of Transportation laid out construction plans during an informational meeting Wednesday.
The work will reconstruct about 4 miles of I-75 between its two junctions with I-675.
Construction plans include replacing bearing pads on the bridge that have been worn down over the decades, and the work could provide some new jobs.
"I-75 is a significant corridor, including the Zilwaukee Bridge, for trade, for tourism, for travel. And so we want to make sure that we do our best to ensure that we're ensuring the structural integrity of the Zilwaukee bridge and of the roadway, the highway in general," MDOT spokeswoman Anita Richardson said.
Three lanes of traffic will remain open during the project.
Work is expected to take two years once it begins in April 2013.
