High-speed chase ends with suspect's car spinning into ditch

A routine traffic stop for one local Sheriff's deputy turned into anything but routine when the stopped car sped off and a high speed chase ensued.

The case occurred Monday when a deputy from the Clare County Sheriff's office stopped a 1990 Pontiac Firebird on US-10 near Lake Station Ave. After making contact with the car's occupants and returning to his patrol car, Clare County Sheriff John Wilson said the 22-year-old Lake, Mich. man behind the wheel fled from the scene in his car.

As the pursuit began, authorities said it reached speeds of over 100 mph. Deputies said it ended about a half-mile into Osceola County on US-10 when the man attempted a U-turn in front of the officer and the vehicles made contact, spinning the Firebird into the ditch.

Wilson said in a news release that minor damage was done to the Firebird and none to the patrol car.

The 22-year-old man was arrested for fleeing and eluding police and had multiple outstanding warrants. His passenger, a 19-year-old Big Rapids woman, was also arrested on multiple outstanding warrants.
