High winds knock out power to 143,000 across state

Winds gusting to 74 miles per hour have knocked out power to at least 143,000 Michigan homes and businesses as the fringes of superstorm Sandy move through the state.

DTE Energy Co. says about 110,000 of its customers have lost power from the high winds linked to the Eastern Seaboard's rough weather. It says about 80,000 remained without power at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Mid-Michigan is feeling the affects as a number of Consumer's Energy customers are without power.

More than 392 customers are in the dark in Genesee County.

Shiawassee County is reporting 90 outages.

Consumers Energy is working to get power restored and hopes to have everything back up and running by later today.

In the Thumb, thousands of DTE Energy customers are in the dark. Huron County has around 4,000 customers without power. Sanilac County has nearly 500 customers offline and 300 are without power in Tuscola County.
