Cuts could be coming to Saginaw public safety
A controversial topic is back on the table as Saginaw City Council met to discuss ways to reduce the Saginaw's $3.5 million budget deficit.
One of the main targets focuses in on police and fire services, which makes up two-thirds of the general budget.
Right now, Saginaw can not collect more than $3.8 million in taxes to pay its bills, because the city's 7.5-mill tax cap has frozen the millage rate since 1979.
Firefighters fear it could result in big layoffs for both the police and fire departments, including 15 of the 65-member fire department. Saginaw's fire department once staffed more than 100 firefighters.
The largest decrease of firefighters in recent years was 2003, when the city trimmed 14 staff jobs.
The tax cap has been voted on and voted down seven times.
