The Coast Guard rescued an injured snowmobiler near the mouth of the Saginaw River on Friday night. Rescue crews responded to a call about a man being thrown off his snowmobile on the ice.
Medics transported the person to McLaren Hospital, at the time the person was breathing but unresponsive.
The Bangor Township Fire Department was first on scene and gave emergency care to the injured person.
A rescue boat crew used a 20-foot Special Purpose Craf-Air launched from Coast Guard Station Saginaw River.
"Right now, our concern is people falling through the ice, but we are ready and have trained for all situations, such as injuries on the ice," said Petty Officer Second Class Ryan Sayers.
When venturing out on the ice, the Coast Guard encourages people to always remember the acronym I.C.E.:
Intelligence - know the weather and ice conditions, know where you are going, and know how to call for help. Never go out alone.
Clothing - have the proper clothing to prevent hypothermia. Wear a waterproof exposure suit and a life jacket.
Equipment - have the proper equipment. Carry a cellular phone or marine band radio in a waterproof container so that you can call for help.
