Some college students stopped at a local school to clown around today, but it wasn't all fun and games.

Their message was aimed at stopping bullying before it has a chance to start.

"If we make a difference in one young person's life, then we've made a difference," said Brian "Bubby" Ivory, Mott Community College professor and clown leader.

Bubby has been clowning around for more than 20 years. Last year he had an idea that would bring his two worlds together.

"I remembered that clowning was a great experience for the college students back in the 80s and decided that I would revive that part of my past," said Ivory

So the Mott Campus Clowns were born.

At first the troop was just clowning around. Then Bubby and some folks at Mott came up with a fun program to nip bullying in the bud.

The clowns came to Pierce Elementary School with a very powerful message about what bullying is and what to do if you are being bullied. Because they were just clowning around and having fun, the kids were learning something and didn't even know it.

"I believe a lot of the things we learn are from a very young age and it's important to instill this in the children before they get to the age where they're more susceptible to the social influence and such," said Hamaza "Hammy" Blacksher, Mott Campus clown.

The educators at Pierce agree.

"If you want your children to really learn, you need to do something with them that's fun and not something you do all the time, everyday," said Nancy Beecher, Pierce Elementary Par-a-Pro.

The clowns' real message is one we can all live by. "Be kind and look out for one another."

Bubby said the troop plans on spreading the anti-bullying message until they're no longer needed.
