Clare Co. man arrested on child torture charge

Deputies form the Clare County Sheriff's department were called Wednesday to a Clare emergency room where they found a 17-month-old boy who had been assaulted.


Following an investigation, deputies discovered the boy had multiple injuries to all areas of his body. The child was then transported by ambulance to Covenant Hospital in Saginaw for additional treatment.


Wednesday evening, deputies arrested 26-year-old Andrew Sanderson, of Harrison, on charges of child torture, first-degree child abuse and domestic assault. Child torture carries a sentence of up to life in prison.  Officials were alerted to a possible at a local emergency room.


Authorities said Sanderson was in a dating relationship with the boy's mother. The sheriff's office said Sanderson was out on bond at the time of the incident from a previous domestic assault involving the child's mother.


Michigan Department of Corrections records indicate Sanderson previously served probation sentences on charges of indecent exposure, carrying concealed weapons, attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle and assaulting, resisting or obstructing police.


On Thursday, Sanderson was arraigned in court and bond was set at $250,000.


The boy was transported to Covenant Medical Center for additional treatment.  As of Friday, the boy was still hospitalized.
