SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) - Saginaw police say a 12-year-old boy has died after someone fired shots into an occupied home on the city's east side.
It happened at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday in the 2000 block of Whittier.
Saginaw Police Department Detective Sgt. Joseph Dutoi said the house was riddled with more than a dozen bullets.
Inside the home, officers found Tamaris Steward shot in the chest and a 66-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.
Steward was reportedly sitting in a chair in his grandfather's home at the time of the shooting. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital. Steward had just finished his last day of school at Carrollton Middle School on Wednesday.
Superintendent Craig C. Douglas said school officials are meeting to develop a crisis plan in the wake of Steward's death.
>The written school statement from Douglas reads:
"All staff are asked to observe a moment of silence in memory of Carrollton 6th grade student Tamaris (T.J.) Steward, Jr.
T.J. was shot and killed in his sleep in a residence in the city of Saginaw, as reported on the local news outlets earlier today. T.J. lived in Carrollton on Tittabawasee Road with his family.
The Crisis Commiittee met today to develop an action plan, especially to reach out to T.J.'s family and those who have worked closest with T.J. He was known to be an active student, very positive; we are at a loss to say how sorry we are to lose him today.
Included in today's plans will be lowering of district flags to half staff and an "all call message" that will go out this afternoon. Chaplains and counselors are available in the middle school conference room/ office area, today and also tomorrow, for those who would like to meet.
Once funeral arrangements are known, they will be shared throughout the district by email and to middle school families by either letter or phone message."
Dutoi said the 66-year-old man is expected to be released from the hospital later today.
Saginaw police are interviewing several witnesses. Police were also seeking tips from the public.
The shooting comes just days after a 4-year-old girl was shot during a vehicle shootout on Saginaw's south side. The shooting occurred at the intersection of Sheridan and Webber Monday at about 1:30 p.m.
The child's injury is not life-threatening. Police are still looking for the suspect vehicle and gunman in that incident.
