One local county may soon get some relief from high water bills.
Bay County is close to a deal on a nearly $60 million water treatment plant.
The current water treatment facility is near the end of its 40-year life span, so organizers say now is the time for a new plant.
That facility was built in 1979.
A Dec. 31 deadline has been set, but state officials said an extension could be granted that would allow a decision to be postponed until the end of January.
Bay City currently gets water from Saginaw Bay, but the new system would allow the city to purchase water from the Saginaw-Midland Municipal Water Supply Corporation, which gets its supply from Whitestone Point near Au Gres.
A total of 14 local government entities, including Bay City, are involved.
