Arson bills signed into law

New bills have been signed into law that will crack down on arson-related fires.

The law increases penalties and changes sentencing guidelines for those convicted of arson.

First-degree arson could result in punishment of life in prison.

In 2011, almost 11,000 fires were as a result of arson, or one out of every three.

State Rep. Stacey Erwin Oakes from Saginaw was one of the main sponsors of House Bill 5692 and 5695.
